Research Statement

Dr Debbie Haski-Leventhal is a scholar of the organisational behaviour of volunteers. Her main interest involves examining organisational behaviour theories and assumptions, when monetary reward is taken out of the equation. There are over 7 million volunteers in Australia who contribute to the Australian economy as much as the mining industry does, yet this devoted and effective human resource is often overlooked.

In addition, Dr Haski-Leventhal devotes herself to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which enables companies to become “part of the solution,” engage with the community and to prosper while also “doing good.” She is particularly interested in employees’ involvement in CSR practices.

Contribution to Management Education

Dr Debbie Haski-Leventhal teaches organisational behaviour and human resource management. She has also taught specific courses such as the management of volunteers, management of not-for-profit organisations and management in a tri-sectoral context.

Contribution to Management Practice

Dr Debbie Haski-Leventhal is a firm believer in creating social impact and influence through research. She aims to influence policy-makers in Australia through research and publications as well as by providing consultation to decision-makers. She is a consultant to the United Nations Volunteers Agency and is assisting in writing the State of the World Volunteering Report. She has contributed to the National Strategy on Volunteerism in Australia, and submitted a briefing paper to the Commonwealth Department of Prime Minster & Cabinet on volunteering and social inclusion.

Her publications are used worldwide to provide volunteer managers with knowledge and best practices. Her work on organisational socialisation provides insights that can help manage newcomers effectively. She has also conducted studies on corporate social responsibility to influence the business sector’s involvement in the community.
