MGSM Study Options

Extended Academic Year

Running from early January to early December, MGSM's extended academic year enables you to fast-track your program.

There are four 10-week terms, with one week of examinations and a one-week break between each term. This allows you to complete the MGSM MBA in one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

Weekly or Block Classes

You are able to select from weekly lectures or block classes. Weekly lectures enable you to attend one face-to-face class each week per course unit. Block classes, on the other hand, allow you to study the face-to-face hours intensively over five days or two weekends in the 10-week term. Given MGSM's attendance requirements, block classes are convenient for those whose employment requires travel.

One preferred study option of students when undertaking two units a term (part-time) is to enrol in one weekly offering and one block offering, depending on timetable availability.

You will be required to attend all classes for the duration of each unit.

However, exceptional circumstances are taken into consideration such as unavoidable travel on behalf of your organisation or the serious illness or injury of you or a close family member. Special consideration may be given for a maximum of 20% non-attendance in such circumstances.

Weekly Lectures  -  morning classes are available to MBA Cohort and Masters students only

Generalist or Specialist Programs

With a broad range of course units and specialisations, you may choose to pursue a general management program or to follow a specialised stream.

As you articulate through the progression path, for example, from the Postgraduate Diploma in Management to the Master of Management, the number of core units and the number of elective units will increase.

When undertaking a generalist program, you may select electives across the entire range of course units on offer, pending program selection and completion of any listed prerequisites.

When undertaking a specialist program in the Postgraduate Certificate in Management, Postgraduate Diploma in Management or the Master of Management, you may select elective units within that specialist stream.

For further Information on elective choices please refer to the MBA programs brochure. To download this brochure click here.

Choosing Elective Units

Knowing your goals and being able to accurately identify any areas for further development will ensure that you are in the best position to choose your elective units.

We recommend that you select elective units that will:

  • enhance your knowledge base in your current industry or profession;
  • assist in strengthening any weaknesses in your current skill set; and
  • assist you in developing skills that will allow you to move to another industry or profession, if so desired.

We also advise you to consider undertaking course units with your personal interests in mind while in the process of achieving the aforementioned.

Understanding the way you learn

Having a clear understanding of how you prefer to learn will improve your learning experience at MGSM. For example, if you have a background in finance, you may find that course units in and related to this area are more easily absorbed and can be effectively undertaken in the intensive block format.

On the other hand, course units that fall outside your background, such as marketing, may require more time on your part to absorb, process and understand. In this instance, a weekly class may be more beneficial.
