Group Work

When you study at MGSM, every core course unit, with the exception of Foundations of Management Thought, involves syndicate group work.

Working in and coordinating groups and teams is commonplace in business today and we aim to replicate that environment.

You may often have no choice with whom you work, yet a suitable outcome is expected.

Syndicate group work allows for the broadening of business knowledge, as the interaction with fellow students provides different perspectives on business issues.

MGSM's emphasis on syndicate group work allows for the transfer of learning between students and increases their exposure to a variety of industries, cultures, job functions and operating styles of other organisations.

Syndicate groups typically comprise four to six people, often in middle to senior management positions and with extensive work experience. Group members will have different perspectives, opinions and experiences to share which creates an environment for the cross-fertilisation of knowledge and a chance to step beyond the bounds of 'familiar thinking'.

Syndicate group work provides many challenges. Unlike the workplace, there is no source of authority. Part of the challenge of syndicate groups is the negotiation and communication that occurs among a team with members who have different personalities, perspectives, opinions, approaches and communication styles.

While there are many challenges in working in groups, our students rate syndicate group work as one of the most enriching and beneficial aspects of studying at MGSM.

We believe that you will graduate from our MBA program not only with superior knowledge, but also with significantly improved skills in the areas of teamwork, communication, negotiation and presentation delivery.
