Finance for Non-Finance Managers

Overview

Finance for Non-Finance Managers program is an interactive and practical program designed to equip business people with the capacity and insight to make decisions which yield better financial results.

Problems which carry financial implications arise in organisations every day and confront managers from all disciplines.

Yet many people faced with this reality find themselves overwhelmed and lacking in confidence when it comes to making decisions with a financial impact. Recognising this, MGSM's approach to financial management is to provide insight and empowerment that cuts through unnecessary clutter and complexity.

We focus on the fundamental principles which can be relied upon for decision-making on a day-to-day basis.

Content

The Finance for Non-Finance Managers program is structured around two key knowledge sets:

1. The use of financial information for the purposes of communicating to those inside and outside the organisation, with an emphasis on:

a) how to better understand the content of messages being sent by others
b) how to improve the content of your own financial communications

2. The use of key financial tools for decision-making purposes. Both knowledge sets are interrelated and  complementary and when combined represent a powerful addition to the capabilities participants can bring to their own organisations.

Topics

  • Key elements of financial statements and their meaning
  • Assumptions made in constructing financial statements
  • How to read, decode and understand financial statements
  • How to frame better questions to improve communications around financial issues
  • The means through which business costs can be analysed, understood and managed
  • The interactions between factors such as pricing, profitability and volume of business and how these can be managed to drive better value generation
